Our Story

In 1995 Cox’s was established as a Smokers Outlet that offered a full line of tobacco products at discounted prices. In 1997, we expanded our St. Matthews location to include Spirits, Wine, and beer to become Cox’s Smokers Outlet and Spirit Shoppes. Since then we have grown to 21 locations offering a full line of Spirits, Wine, Beer, Premium Cigars, E-Cigarettes, VAPE & CBD, and Tobacco products.

Cox’s represent each neighborhood we serve with a variety of products that reflects the neighborhood in which the store sits. Cox’s works closely with it’s suppliers to purchase products at the lowest possible price in order to pass these deals on to our customers, including delivery! We offer fast, friendly neighborhood service to our customers. Cox’s Smoker’s Outlet & Spirit Shoppes and Evergreen Liquors is always looking at better ways to serve our customers, whether with new products, updating our current locations, or opening new locations. We pride ourselves on clean, well-lit, well-stocked stores and friendly service.

Our Beginning

Billy Grantz and Tom Kupper opened the first Cox’s Smokers Outlet in July 1995. Over the next 25 years Cox’s has grown to 21 Louisville area locations. Billy and Tom each have over 40 years’ experience in all aspects of running a successful retail business. Both started in 1980 working for a local family-owned drug store chain, Otto Drugs. Otto’s was owned by their fathers Charlie Grantz and Irvin Kupper. Over the next 20 years, Billy and Tom were involved in all aspects of Otto Drugs. Otto’s prided itself in being a local and family-owned business with great customer service. Charlie and Irvin had 22 kids between both families so the business had to be successful to feed that many faces. In 1995, Billy and Tom opened their first Cox’s Smoker’s Outlet carrying on the Grantz/Kupper Partnership. Cox’s has changed over the past 20 years with more of a focus on Liquor, wine, beer, premium cigars as well as cigarettes and tobacco products. Cox’s employs over 150 people. Billy and Tom have carried on the tradition they learned from their fathers as being a Louisville family-owned and operated business in which they take great pride in customer service.
